Using the Wheel - Start Colour

Using the wheel is simple.

Firstly you need to arrive at a Start Colour. To identify what this colour is, draw a plan of the room to be decorated including the furnishings which will definitely be staying. Add in and locate any new additions. From this identify the predominant colour of the objects that will remain in the room after decoration e.g. carpet, curtains, furniture etc. This is your start colour.

Next establish where within the wheel your start colour fits and you immediately are made aware, as shown above, of colours next to (in harmony) opposite to (in contrast) or just variations on the same theme (tonal shades).

If you have difficulty in identifying your start colour many decorating centres/DIY stores nowadays have scanning equipment on site which can establish the start colour from a sample.

Although on-line colour representation is limited by the equipment you are using, the Dulux Trade web site provides a useful catalogue of the 1,000's of colours available. Our Quality Paint web page also contains links to other major paint manufacturers who have similar online catalogues or we have a range of colour brochures and a Dulux Fandeck we can make available.

Colour Scheme

Albeit that the Start Colour coupled with the Colour Wheel will give you the beginning of a scheme what you now need is a combination of colours that provide you with the "feel" within the space.

To make this easier Dulux Trade have further classified the Colour Wheel into colour combinations that convey what they describe as the following "moods":

  • Rich - intense & dramatic feature walls with neutral supporting colour combinations.
  • Fresh -  Bright to pastel shades perfect for maximising the light in darker interiors.
  • Warm - Cosy and relaxed. Mellow colours that create friendly and welcoming space.
  • Calm - Soft and sophisticated shades ideal for rooms with lots of light.
  • Neutrals - These colours are generally very versatile across the spectrum. However, mood combinations are also available, under the above headings, for Neutral colours as well.
